Another milestone occasion at Kahns Jewellers as we celebrate our double ‘chai’ anniversary! 2 x 18 years in business is truly a special milestone in so many ways.
We have great customers who keep coming back and have made our journey so wonderful and worthwhile. You are all part of the Kahns Jewellers family, and every ring sized, diamond set, watch repaired, or gift purchased has a special story!
Like the customer who brought her earring in for repair – she had just arrived in Europe and had to open her iPhone to put in a new sim card – the earring pin did the trick, even if she couldn’t wear her earring again until Selwyn rescued it! 🤨
Then there’s the customer who asked Sandy if her dad could repair his chain, and without missing a beat, Sandy called out to the workshop, “dad, can you fix this chain?!” LOL we had a good laugh!! 😃
And then there are happy/sad stories, after all, most custom designs are all about creating lasting memories. The first pair of wedding bands Selwyn made in Cape Town in 1982 are no longer worn by two; sadly, our dear friend and customer’s husband recently passed away🙁. But there is a silver lining, the rings have been soldered together and they now shine beautifully on one hand instead of two! 💕
Thanks everyone for joining us on this amazing journey! Still making memories and still adding sparkle to your life after 36 years!

June 1st 1983 was a momentous day in the young lives of Selwyn Kahnand Sandy De Jong Kahn – when we first opened the doors to Kahns Jewellers! Selwyn’s once onyx coloured hair is now silver and sparse; Cape Town’s surf and sun was replaced with skis and skates in Toronto; Braydon Kahn and Dustin Kahn have grown up (where has the time gone); and the family’s expanded with Leah Kahn! But there is one constant – our customers’ smiles haven’t changed over the years!

Our slogan, “adding sparkle to your life” has produced so many grateful smiles over the past 35 years. We’ve sized more than 5,500 rings, repaired over 7,300 broken chains, and replaced 9,000 watch batteries! Even our trademark custom designs have added up to thousands!

We have so many stories, some happy, some sad, some funny and some scary! One customer brought in a ring she hadn’t worn for 20 years which no longer fitted, and in true Selwyn style, he said “gosh, your ring must have shrunk!” and the customer, totally believing him, replied, “really?” 😊
Then there was a customer who lost her precious bracelet and found it 3 years later while gardening, and a similar story when a valuable ring was found amongst debris after the winter thaw! We’ve seen our fair share of tears, but mostly tears of joy and gratitude when seeing a remodelled, repaired or custom designed piece of jewellery! 💍

Over the years, Selwyn has inherited several interesting titles, from “Dr. Kahn” when frantic customers needed ‘emergency surgery’ requiring cutting, prying or sawing rings off swollen fingers; to “Saviour Selwyn” when distraught customers needed estimated replacement values of once beloved, now stolen jewellery; and “Secret Keeper” when trusted with keeping hundreds of secrets for soon-to-be-engaged couples!

We couldn’t have reached this milestone anniversary without all of you, our loyal customers around the globe. You’ve made each day feel golden! Your hugs, smiles and thank-yous have made it all worth while.
35 years and counting… May the memories continue! 🥂💍💎

It’s that time of Year… when we think of those in need.
Our Xmas campaign this year is supporting Covenant House Toronto, who in turn support homeless youth in need of a warm bed, a hot meal and a chance at a better future. Every year, backpacks are filled with gifts for young adults staying over the Christmas season.

You can help us by dropping off a gift at Kahns Jewellers.

The following items would be greatly appreciated, for ages 16-24, especially boys:
* socks and underwear
* gift cards – Walmart, Shoppers, Subway, Tim Hortons
* non-perishable food – granola bars, canned meat & fish, mac & cheese, peanut butter, cereal, canned fruit & veg, chocolate bars & (nut-free) candy
* men’s hygiene products
* men’s belts and wallets
* movie passes
We’re proud to be supporting Covenant House, and with your help, we’re making a difference to at-risk, homeless youth in our community!

She said YES! 💍
A Royal engagement on November 27th, but what about the ring? The only unorthodox element of Meghan Markle’s classic engagement ring, is the colour of the metal! While white gold and platinum have been more popular since the early 2000s, Markle’s ring is yellow gold.
The stunningly simple ring features a cushion-cut, white diamond center stone with two round brilliant diamonds. What’s noteworthy about the diamonds, like so many couples before them, is their great sentimental significance. Prince Harry sourced the center stone from Botswana and the smaller diamonds on the side are from his mother’s jewellery collection “to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together.”

Meghan also wore a classic pair of 18ct yellow gold and white opal earrings. And like Princess Diana, I’m sure Meghan will be setting more fashion trends than just her engagement ring, earrings and white coat!

We’re Celebrating our 34th Birthday with a Carat? Karat? Carrot Cake!

Carat, Karat, Carrot – it all sounds the same but they’re used for different celebrations! June 1st 1983 Kahns Jewellers opened its doors and we’re still celebrating 34 years later with carats, karats and carrots!

A Carat is somewhat older than Kahns Jewellers! The modern carat system has its roots in the carob seed (pic), which comes from the locust tree. Because the small seeds are fairly uniform in size and weight, they were a useful measurement for determining the weight of a gem. Early merchants used carob seeds as counterweights in hand-held balance scales.
Carat weight was standardized as 0.20 gram in the early twentieth century. This gave Jewellers a uniform and universally accepted weight standard for diamonds.

Karat is the measure of gold’s purity. A karat has 24 parts, so 18K gold means that the metal is 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals (commonly copper, silver and/or zinc).

Carrots, well, that’s the ingredient for our 34th birthday celebratory cake!🌶️🎂

Our support for abused women and children at Yellow Brick House over Christmas brought smiles and tears of gratitude!

Betty ‘drove’ into Kahns Jewellers in her electric wheelchair, her hair was windswept, her coat unzipped on a cool winter’s morning. She drove over from the nearby senior’s home to buy a Christmas present for her daughter. Betty really liked the shiny white gold anklet for $49, but as she only had $35 in her purse, she finally settled on a pretty silver anklet for $22. When I asked if the gift was going under a Christmas tree, and would she like it gift wrapped, Betty’s jaw dropped open and she was speechless for a while. Eventually she regained her composure, and with tears in her eyes, she said “really?… that would be wonderful… I can’t wrap presents anymore,” as she showed me her arthritic hands!

The smile on Betty’s face as she left Kahns Jewellers was something special to see. We often gift-wrap presents, but seldom have we seen such appreciation for something we perceive to be so small.

It’s heartwarming to know that we’re still “adding sparkle to your life since 1983.”

At Kahns Jewellers EVERY day is Mother’s Day!

But this Sunday, it’s a little more special.
It’s the BEST job in the world, it’s the HARDEST job in the world, it’s the most REWARDING job in the world!
Spoil your mother with something special – how can you go wrong with jewellery?!
If that something special is breakfast in bed, a poem from the heart, or a walk in the park – cherish the moment, enjoy the day!

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY everyone – hope it’s special!

Chocolates, roses, jewellery… these are the Valentine’s Day gifts symbolizing love, romance and friendship.

February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, with many stories surrounding St. Valentine. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl (possibly his jailor’s daughter) who visited him during his confinement. Before he died, it’s alleged that he sent her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that was later popularized by Hallmark in 1913.

Whatever your beliefs and traditions – whether you take your loved one for a romantic dinner, buy chocolates, roses or jewellery – how romantic are you?
